There are moments when everything feels loud.
Too many thoughts. Too much emotion. Too much happening all at once.
In those moments, I don’t reach for anything complicated.
I return to something simple.
A candle.
A breath.
A pause.
Over time, this has become one of the most grounding rituals in my life — not because it’s elaborate, but because it creates space.
Space to soften.
Space to regulate.
Space to come back to myself.
The ritual itself is simple.
Light a candle.
Sit somewhere comfortable, where your body can begin to relax. Take a few slow breaths, letting your inhale and exhale lengthen naturally.
Notice where you’re holding tension — your shoulders, your jaw, your chest — and allow those places to soften.
Let your attention rest on the flame.
You don’t need to set an intention.
You don’t need to solve anything.
You don’t need to figure anything out.
Just be present.
There is something deeply regulating about allowing yourself to exist without pressure, even for a few minutes.
The flame becomes an anchor. A steady point in a moment that might otherwise feel overwhelming.
And slowly, your body begins to follow.
This is what ritual can be.
Not something you perform.
But something you return to.
Again and again, whenever you need it.
